Water Efficient/Recycled Materials
Water Efficiency is the smart use of our water resources through water-saving technologies and simple steps we can take to reduce our water usage. Approximately 30% of our water use is devoted to outdoor use. In Sacramento, during the hot summer months, a household’s outdoor water use can be as high as 70 percent. Our goal in designing landscapes is to reduce the water waste by installing weather based irrigation timers, using zoned drip irrigation systems, reducing the size or area of lawns, installing artificial turf, and customizing planting schemes that utilize drought tolerant plants.
There are many native and drought tolerant plants that love the climate in our area. Soil maintenance and mulching also assists in the retention of water.
Recycling Materials such as removing an old driveway that is cracked and broken beyond repair in such a manner that the concrete itself can be re-used as stone for pathways, retaining walls and even patios. Some plants can be removed from one area and replanted in another. Portions of an old wooden deck might be re-purposed into a privacy screen, pergola or bench seating.
